Vlandian Pikemen are really lousy and outclassed by Vlandian Sergeants. Imperial Palatine Guards seem almost completely outclassed by Imperial Sergeant Crossbowmen. It's either the crossbowmen or Bucellarii imo. The entire Blaze line probably takes the cake though. 1H infantry with no shield and horrible armor.The new system barely works and focuses on sorting by equipment, but has serious limitations when you want to separate lower-tier troops for xp-farming. You want to use the icons, (particularly helmet for more armor) to separate more armored troops from recruits/ low tier of the same type into separate groups.

My favorite way to play Battania is a 50/50 Fian/Falx army with 3/4 of Falxmen left at tier 4. The regular Falxman performs better in melee than the tier 5 Veteran version, but the Veterans perform better against cav. It's a very easy and versatile army able to play aggressively or defensively.
